Spring Inspired Outfit

Hey guys and welcome to my first fashion post! I'm just going to show you this Spring-inspired outfit I've put together. Here are a couple pics:

Blazer, Jones New York; Tank, Abercrombie & Fitch; Jeans, Lucky Brand; Shoes, Payless.

Why I love this outfit:
The floral tank, light wash denim, and open-toed low heels all scream spring, but the blazer gives the outfit a put-together look. This outfit would be perfect for lunch or shopping. Also, it was inexpensive: the blazer was a hand-me-down, the tank was on sale, the jeans are from Marshall's, and the shoes are from Payless Shoe Source.

Have fun putting together your own spring outfits!

Love, Val

P.S. With this outfit, I'm wearing my hair loose and wavy, but I'd also recommend a clipped-up style or a braided bun (learn how to make one here). Note that braids, buns, and waves are in for Spring 2010 runway!

Homemade Hair Mask

Hey girls! So I've been growing my hair out for seven months now, and as you know it is essential to keep long hair healthy. Through my research on healthy hair tricks, I found out about hair masks, or goop you cover your hair in and leave in for an hour. Hair masks are excellent for nourishing and strengthening your hair, so without further ado, here's how to make one!

Materials Needed:
  • 1 cup mayonaise
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil
  • mixing bowl and spoon
  • plastic wrap and plastic bag
  • comb, hair tie
(The mayonnaise and oils condition your hair; the egg strengthens.)

1) Mix together mayo, egg, and oil in a small mixing bowl. Appetizing, huh? (Note: one cup was plenty for my long, thick hair, but if you have thinner or shorter hair, I'd advise less mayo.)
2) With your hair dry and combed, begin working the mixture through your scalp as if you were massaging in shampoo. Once your scalp is thoroughly covered in the mixture, coat the rest of your hair with it. (I did this step in the bathtub and in an old swimsuit, to avoid mess!)
3) Comb through your hair to evenly distribute the mask. Tie your hair into a low bun.
4) Use the plastic wrap to wrap your whole scalp, not leaving any hair uncovered, then put the plastic bag over your hair and tie the handles at your forehead to secure. This is to trap your body heat, furthering the effect of the mask. (Warning: you will look ridiculous after this step. I know I did.)
5) Leave head wrapped for an hour so the mask can soak. Go read a book or give yourself a manicure!
6) Take off and dispose of the bag and wrap, and take your hair out of the bun. Step into the shower and thoroughly rinse out the mask, then shampoo and condition as normal.
7) You're done! Enjoy your soft, healthy hair!

I like to do this monthly, and I love how my hair looks. Good luck, and I hope you try it!

Makeup Haul!

Hey all! So a couple weeks ago I placed some makeup orders at Amazon and Dulce Cosmetics (a very inexpensive brand recommended here), and now that I've had some time to test them out I'm doing a haul! Enjoy!

From left to right, top to bottom: boi-ing concealer, baked powder, muffin cake blusher, baked blusher, essential eye brush kit, brilliant fusion palette, eyeshadow trio, duo lip gloss and liner, and liquid eyeliner pen.

1) First is Boi-ing Concealer by Benefit in 02. I bought this concealer because I'd gotten a sample of it before and LOVED it! Boi-ing is a cream concealer that is great for undereye circles, redness, and blemishes. When I use this I skip the foundation.
2) Next, Dulce Cosmetics baked powder in 02, a sheer, marbleized powder that instantly mattifies my skin. I like to buff it in with a powder brush.
3) Now Muffin Cake blusher by Dulce Cosmetics in 04. This is a really pretty blusher, marbleized between light gold and pink, and it shows up as a nice peachy flush.
4) This is Dulce Cosmetics' metallic blusher in 04, but I like using it as a bronzer! This is great for that shimmering, summer glow.
5) Now for a change of pace, some brushes! This cute Sonia Kashuk essential eye kit comes with five eyeshadow brushes: a large eye shadow brush, an angled bush, a sponge applicator, a crease brush, and a smudge brush. While shorter than I expected, these brushes do the job much better than what I previously used (the applicators shadows come with or my fingers)!
6) Possibly my favorite purchase, Dulce Cosmetics' brilliant fusion eyeshadow palette in 02 is a gorgeous mix of pigmented shimmering neutrals, perfect for an everyday or formal eye.
7) Now another eyeshadow by Dulce Cosmetics, their Viva Trilogy trio in 05. I bought this shadow on a whim, and I'm glad I did, because the shimmery red, brown, and pink are great for a glam party eye!
8) Next, Dulce Cosmetics' duo lip gloss and liner in 05. While the lip gloss is pretty standard, I do like the frosty pink color, and the brown liner it comes with is actually really nice as a casual eyeliner.
9) Finally, PenAbsolute liquid eyeliner by Dulce Cosmetics. This is my first liquid eyeliner ever, and I was surprised at how easy it is to get a nice, thin line. The pen applicator is definitely a plus for us eyeliner beginners!

That's all for today! I hope you enjoyed the haul, and check out some more photos after the jump!

Drugstore Mascara Showdown!

Hey guys! So today I decided to do a little makeup post, and I thought a 'mascara showdown' would be fun and useful for those of you who want to try a new mascara. All four of the mascaras are available at any drugstore, so without further ado, let's begin!

From left to right: Lash Exact, Clean Definition, Great Lash, and Telescopic Explosion.
1) First is CoverGirl Lash Exact, a mascara designed for definition and length. The wand is rubber, with lots of short, straight bristles. I love this mascara because it does what it claims - gives me a clump-free lift!
2) Next, L'Oréal Paris Clean Definition Telescopic. That's a mouthful! Similar to Lash Exact, this mascara is also designed for clump-less lashes. Its wand is also rubber with short, straight bristles, but the wand is longer and the bristles are more organized than Lash Exact's. This mascara really delivers, and I like it even more than my previous favorite, Lash Exact.
3) Now an old staple, Maybelline Great Lash. This mascara is supposed to be for thickened, voluminous lashes. While I do like this mascara, its old-fashioned bristle wand only gives me a bit of a natural lift. This mascara is perfect for first-time mascara users because it's very easy to use and will give your lashes a nice pick-me-up.
4) Finally, L'Oréal Paris Telescopic Explosion. This is the drugstore 'dupe' of Givenchy Phenomen'eyes, which is a high-end mascara and the first to come out with a spherical wand. L'Oréal's version has the same spherical wand, and promises you volumized lashes, and that its wand will reach every lash. While the mascara did give me volume, the formula clumped on my lashes, and I am the sort of person who hates clumpy mascara. I do like the design though, and will be using it on my outer corners.

That's all for now! I hope this was useful to you guys. Comment and let me know what your favorite mascara is!

Marshall's/Target Steals!

Hey everyone! So I posted this morning about my idea to add little extras to this blog, like makeup tutorials and hauls. This afternoon I went to Marshall's and Target, and I decided to try a haul post, just to test things out. So let me know what you think in the comments section!

First, a Merona daytime purse from Target. This was on clearance for only $7 and it was so cute I couldn't resist! It's a canvas/cloth material with a green and white diagonal stripe design. Medium sized (my favorite size) and casual, it'd be great for going to the beach, shopping, or to the movies. I can't wait to start using this!
Next, a skinny black Merona belt, also from Target. I've needed a good versatile belt for forever, and this is just the thing! This belt will go with everything, and only $8. It's a nice black leather-looking material.
Finally - my most exciting purchase! Light wash Lucky Brand bootcut jeans from Marshall's. I am SO happy to have found such a deal! Lucky Brand is a hugely popular clothing brand known for their jeans, and to snap up a pair originally $110 for just $35 is amazing! These jeans are big on me, but in a cute, boyfriend-jeans way. Ahhh!! (That's me being excited!)

So there's my first haul! I'm so happy with all my purchases.

New Blog!

Hey all!
I'm just testing out the new blog. I got it mainly just to snap up the URL so no one else can take it. :)
I think I'm going to make this a beauty/fashion blog. Lately I've found that I'm quite obsessed with all things hair and makeup, so maybe this could be a 'creative outlet' for all that!
Anywho, I have to go now. See you all later!
